This is a traditional hot fudge sauce that can be used as topping for ice cream or as a dipping sauce.

Ingredients
8-oz dark chocolate, chopped
7 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup hot water
1 teaspoon vanilla
pinch salt
Instructions
In a double boiler over medium-high heat, add chocolate, butter, sugar, cream, and water. Stir with a wooden spoon until well combined (emulsified). Add vanilla and salt.

This is basic recipe and can be adapted according to taste. For example, you can substitute milk chocolate for dark. Or add more or less salt and vanilla. It really depends on what you like. I would not, however; substitute half and half for full milk for the cream – unless there is no other dairy around and you’re really craving some version of a hot fudge sauce.
If you don’t have a double boiler. Boil water in a sauce pan and place a bowl on top. The key is to not apply direct heat to the ingredients. The chocolate will burn. I’ve not tried it, but I’m fairly sure you could make this in a microwave. I think the key to success there would be to either not use full power and to check on the sauce every 30 seconds or so.
